A Rude but Necessary Interruption.

three in a series of three

Sorry, can i just interrupt the flow for a moment? I need to do something.

Sure, be my guest.

External shot, suburban-street, daytime, semi detached house.

In the distance we hear the sound of a distant motorbike coming closer.

Sound becomes louder and motorbike crosses left to right.

Window opens at side of house and two legs appear.

Young boy slips out of house, carefully closes the window and slips through the neighbours hedge. Using the hedge as a screen he crouches and runs along the lawns of the other houses towards the left and out of shot.

Corner of street, daytime, birdsong.

Young boy comes around corner, crouching then stands up and starts skipping down the street. Camera follows. Fade out.

External shot, greengrocers.

Car slowly passes right to left as boy walks into shot right. Car window is open and we hear sound of radio, soft at first then loud and fading as boy walks into shop.

Internal shot, greengrocers. Ticking of clock.

Boy enters shop and looks up at clock. Picks up plastic bag and crosses to fruit.

External shot, greengrocers. Clock  starts to chime.

Young boy exists shop carrying a bag of fruit and a bunch of flowers. He looks up at clock and starts running out of shot left.

External shot; gravel courtyard and entrance to hospice. Sounds of feet in gravel.

Young boy runs into shot, across courtyard and jumps the steps into the entrance of hospice.

Internal shot. Reception desk. Sound of pen scratching as it writes.

Young boy is signing in. Matron at desk .

Internal shot. Bedroom at hospice.

Elderly man sitting on a chair next to an empty table. He is facing the window. Clock above door finishes chiming midday.
Silence.
Man waits.

External shot corridor of hospice. Silence except footsteps

Young boy approaches door.
Young boy turns handle.

Internal shot bedroom hospice. Sound of door opening

Elderly man turns to look at door as it opens and smiles. He stands, reaching towards young boy.
Young boy drops bag and rushes towards elderly man and they embrace.

YB - “Grandad”

Internal shot close up.

Young boy helps elderly man sit.

YB - “Daffodils” – he takes the man’s hand and closes them around the flowers.
We see that the man is blind as he raises the flowers to his nose and inhales deeply.

In the background, unfocussed, young boy crosses to cupboard, removes vase and fills it at a sink.

Close up. Table. Two chairs. Flowers in vase. Bag of fruit on floor next to boy.

YB - “You have to guess” He hands elderly man a pomegranate.

Elderly man fondles fruit in his hands, raises it to his nose.

EM - “Banana?” The young boy giggles.

Boy takes a knife from his pocket and cuts the fruit and hands one piece to the man.
Boy and man raise the fruit to their noses and inhale.

EM- “Paradise”.
